Interesting church to visit. Very knowledgeable volunteers who give guided tours. Must visit if you're interested in William Morris art and design.
Its a great place to visit
First, a qualification: I am not a fan of Pre-Raphaelite painting. Give me the Madonna in the Meadow or the Castelfranco Madonna rather than Prosperine or Ophelia. That said, I think I find Pre-Raphaelite stained glass more convincing than the oil paintings. Putting my taste to one side, this is an outstanding gallery of Pre-Raphaelite stained glass and painted decoration, which should be on the "must see" list of anyone with an interest in the genre or stained glass generally.St Martin-on-the-Hill is a High Victorian church designed by George Bodley, a pupil of George Gilbert Scott, and funded, principally, by Mary Craven, a South Cliff resident. It was Bodley's engagement of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co that led to the stunning decoration of the church. This is Scarborough's seemingly unsung Pre-Raphaelite gallery, as well as a substantial Anglican church. Here there are stained glass and paintings by Morris, Burne-Jones, Rosetti, Webb and Ford Madox Brown. The decoration has a unified feel, which heightens the experience of the church interior. The glass designs, compositions, colours - vibrant and dense, without over saturation - and details are very impactful. It is well worth consulting the Friends of St Martin's web site before visiting and not only to establish the church's opening times. There is a short guidebook (3 when I visited) available in the church, which is very informative. There was a church volunteer arranging flowers by the altar when I was there. Her comments were direct and incisive, as you would expect from someone from Yorkshire, and she helpfully pointed out things I would otherwise have missed.I failed to get an adequate photograph of what is hailed in the guidebook as "perhaps the finest window in the church." By Ford Madox Brown and showing two events in St Martin's life, it is located in the parish office in the south side, west end of the church.Entrance to the church is at the west end of the south side.
